Reply with quote | #1 | Ciao Everyone, My Name is Rita & I am a new member , Im Italian & I live in Chicago but Im totally one of those people that should have been born and raised in Italy, I used to live there but came back here when I was 7ish & I would just like to say that for those people who dont have Families in Italy and have all there Nonno's & Nonna's here should totally not take advantage of that! Everytime I go to Italy everyone always has an oppinion , such as my friends there Nonno's and Nonna's live across the street for them & they dont see them for weeks or months , I on the otherhand have to fly 10,000 miles and pay $2,000 just to go see mine! I think that's so unfair! & Also I dislike those people that just because they moved from Italy to America, Canada anywheretalk bad about Italy when they get here when they say that they came to "The land of oppurtinty" Ma please!!!!! Wake up! There's good and Bad in every country and who ever wants to work in Italy works and in Canada or the USA you need a Diploma for any job! So ..............for those that are ignorant and narrow minded.....wake up Ciao Ciao......Rita |

Reply with quote | #2 | Ciao, Benvenuti Rita! Great to have you join us here on our growing Italia Living Forum.
I think I understand why people for years back to the very beginning of this great country of America, have constantly said they've come to here to "the land of opportunity". But, I do understand your feeling too. It does seem there is more opportunity for one without a full education or diploma to succeed in Italy or maybe other countries, but I feel the "opportunity" those immigrants were referring to despite everything going on right now, is still only found here in America.
We have a big need for the Italian lifestyle in America, with the increase in stress in our lives.
Here especially in the US, people often think that wealth and happiness go hand in hand, where in Italy the most important thing is family and friends. With the Italian lifestyle in Italy, money is far from everything. The embrace what they have, being happy with it, and proud of it. And consider their true wealth to be what they already have and are able to share with family and friends.
For the most part I think those coming to America saying they came to "the land of opportunity" were looking for things not available to them in Italy, whatever those things might be that only the individuals personal feelings and desires hold.
But, we in America need to learn from the simplicity of the lifestyle in Italy of slowing down enjoying life and embracing it as it goes by, instead of just watching if zip by in front of your eyes.
As you say Rita, there is good and bad in every country, and opportunity is different to everyone in the eyes of the beholder.
If Italians come to America looking for wealth and money in their search for opportunity...I say,...
"Who is wealthy?
One who is happy with what they have."

Reply with quote | #3 | Buona Sera! Yes your right everyone has there own meaning of values and what "Italians from Italy" would consider wealthy, for me personally I would rather live the way they do, when I go to Sicilia to visit my family im like in a trance , I feel like im apart of everything I just enjoy the lifestyle over there, & for me I feel i was robbed of getting to know the full experience since I came here when I was 7, so maybe thats why I'm also bitter to those people who take advantage of it! I feel eventually I'm going to have to try at least living there just so my mind can be at ease & not wonder everyday what if . . . ! |
