Hello rexgolf...and welcome!
As far as I know, Italian legislation has prohibited smoking in public buildings since 2005, including bars and restaurants. However, designated enclosed and separately ventilated rooms are permited.

Ciao, rexgolf! 'Tis true, no more smoking indoors. Especially in bars and clubs, the absence of the smokey atmosphere seems kind of odd, but I guess it's for the better. At the outdoor cafes and piazzas, it's the same as it always was: people enjoying a smoke as they watch the world go by.
